first college year, but slowly turned into what most blogs essentially are: an archive of posts. From time to time it documents the filtered life, and times of DAA Leopard Chris Thyssen & friends. Oh, and occasionally the life and times of other fellow leopards. Enjoy.

Leopards Blog

***Blog Lovin Award: Most Original Blog***

The Child Services agents reportedly interviewed the Stanly County, NC man and his daughter separately, but took no action. The police, however, did have something to say to Jordan: “Kudos.”

“I actually had a “thank you” from an entire detectives squad,” Jordan wrote in a Facebook post published over the weekend. “And another police officer is using it in a positive manner in his presentation for the school system. How’s about those apples? Didn’t expect THAT when you called the cops did you?”

Many people apparently called to ask Albermarle police what was being done about the angry dad, but were told there was nothing that could be done as Jordan lives outside city limits, and therefore outside police jurisdiction.

Speaking with Channel 9, a Stanly County Sheriff’s Office spox said Jordan broke no laws, and an investigation would not be launched.

Food and water will always be accessible on the airplane. Previously it was required to make food and water available after two hours, but there are no longer limitations. If you are stranded on the tarmac, the airline will be required to have food and water ready.

Medical treatment will always be available to passengers who need it. Previously airlines were only required to provide medical treatment after two hours.

A Department of Transportation consumer hotline will be established so passengers can call toll-free with problems. This hotline will be published on the internet, prominently displayed by carriers on ticket counter signs, and printed on e-ticket confirmations.

Carriers will be required to post the maximum child safety seat size for every type of aircraft they operate to allow passengers to determine which safety seats will function on their flight.

Musical instruments will be treated the same as regular carry-on luggage so long as they meet the standard carry-on guidelines. Airlines will not be allowed to charge you a fee for bringing a musical instrument on to the plane.

A Department of Transportation Advisory Committee will be created in the interest of protecting the consumer flying experience. It will be made up of members of air carriers, airport operators, non-profit interest groups, and members of state and local governments.

Airlines will be required to refer passengers to a Department of Transportation web page that outlines insecticide use. When flying to some countries, the airplane cabin may need to be sprayed to prevent bug infestation. This list will be made available so passengers can determine if they are allergic to any spray that may be used on the aircraft.

Additionally, congress will be looking at ways to encourage airlines to be more generous with active members of military, the Comptroller General will study baggage fees and how baggage service can improve, and airline/airport contingency plans will be put into place.

Eco-friendly Maldives president resigns: Mohamed Nasheed, the...

Eco-friendly Maldives president resigns: Mohamed Nasheed, the first democratically-elected president of the Maldives, long held a reputation as being an environmentally-focused activist and organizer who used those skills to become president in 2008, replacing Maumoon Abdul Gayoom Gayoom, who led the country for three decades. Yet Facebook’s inventory of data and its revenue from advertising are small potatoes compared to some others. Google took in more than 10 times as much, with an estimated $36.5 billion in advertising revenue in 2011, by analyzing what people sent over Gmail and what they searched on the Web, and then using that data to sell ads. […]

Material mined online has been used against people battling for child custody or defending themselves in criminal cases. LexisNexis has a product called Accurint for Law Enforcement, which gives government agents information about what people do on social networks. The Internal Revenue Service searches Facebook and MySpace for evidence of tax evaders’ income and whereabouts, and United States Citizenship and Immigration Services has been known to scrutinize photos and posts to confirm family relationships or weed out sham marriages. Employers sometimes decide whether to hire people based on their online profiles, with one study indicating that 70 percent of recruiters and human resource professionals in the United States have rejected candidates based on data found online. […]

Stereotyping is alive and well in data aggregation. Your application for credit could be declined not on the basis of your own finances or credit history, but on the basis of aggregate data — what other people whose likes and dislikes are similar to yours have done. If guitar players or divorcing couples are more likely to renege on their credit-card bills, then the fact that you’ve looked at guitar ads or sent an e-mail to a divorce lawyer might cause a data aggregator to classify you as less credit-worthy. When an Atlanta man returned from his honeymoon, he found that his credit limit had been lowered to $3,800 from $10,800. The switch was not based on anything he had done but on aggregate data. A letter from the company told him, “Other customers who have used their card at establishments where you recently shopped have a poor repayment history with American Express.”

Even though laws allow people to challenge false information in credit reports, there are no laws that require data aggregators to reveal what they know about you. If I’ve Googled “diabetes” for a friend or “date rape drugs” for a mystery I’m writing, data aggregators assume those searches reflect my own health and proclivities. Because no laws regulate what types of data these aggregators can collect, they make their own rules. […]

In the 1970s, a professor of communication studies at Northwestern University named John McKnight popularized the term “redlining” to describe the failure of banks, insurers and other institutions to offer their services to inner city neighborhoods. The term came from the practice of bank officials who drew a red line on a map to indicate where they wouldn’t invest. But use of the term expanded to cover a wide array of racially discriminatory practices, such as not offering home loans to African-Americans, even those who were wealthy or middle class.

Now the map used in redlining is not a geographic map, but the map of your travels across the Web. The term Weblining describes the practice of denying people opportunities based on their digital selves. You might be refused health insurance based on a Google search you did about a medical condition. You might be shown a credit card with a lower credit limit, not because of your credit history, but because of your race, sex or ZIP code or the types of Web sites you visit.

Today On TDW: Gossip —

The beginning...

FC Barcelona vs. Brazil in 1999 - The Full Match

The beginning of the week is never enjoyable, but let’s lessen the dosage of suffering with a glorious find on Youtube. 1999 was FC Barcelona’s centenary year and the whole season was quite the celebration of everything FC Barcelona. The highlight of the season (apart from winning the league title) was a friendly match on the 28th of April against the boys from Brazil who finished 2nd in the 1998 World Cup.

Ronaldo (the original) and Romario were making their return to the Camp Nou, but all eyes were on FC Barcelona maestro Rivaldo. Before the game, Rivaldo said he was happy to wear the Blaugrana jersey, but country won over club and Rivaldo played for his homeland. Legends were aplenty, as Figo (before the Real Madrid transfer) put on a show. Pep Guardiola started the match, but was subbed off at half time. Who subbed him off? Well, a certain young Catalan midfielder named Xavi. The match ended 2-2, and it was a real spectacle for all involved. (Full line-ups listed in the description of the video)

Forty is the only number in the english language that is spelled alphabetically.

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Even though the Super...

This Is All Kinds Of Wrong of the Day: Even though the Super Bowl was officially the most watched TV program in US history, one person at Lucas Oil Stadium was completely invisible to viewers: Miss Deaf America Rachel Mazique.

Mazique, a representative of the National Association of the Deaf, was invited to sign both the national anthem and “America the Beautiful” as Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Lambert, and Blake Shelton belted the words.

Unfortunately, as Mazique was not placed near the singers during the performance, her signing was not shown on television nor, reportedly, on the stadium’s jumbotron.

The University of Texas Ph.D student, who has been an inspiration to many in the deaf community, says she was “very disappointed” at having missed an opportunity “to showcase ‘America the Beautiful’ and the national anthem in ASL on television.”

NAD has launched a petition through change.org demanding an apology from NBC and the NFL.

“I truly hope that this becomes a teachable moment for everyone involved,” Mazique said, “and that American Sign Language renditions of these iconic songs are broadcast in future Super Bowls rather than being a token gesture.”

The Mangusta sports car was sold between 1967 and 1971. Overall the iconic car was only produced 401 times. Designer Maxime de Keiser wanted to pay tribute to the icon and presents the Mangusta Legacy Concept, a vision of how the car might look today.

Facebook Inc. founder Mark Zuckerberg wants to change the world, conquer Wall Street and usher in a new dawn for Silicon Valley, just don’t expect him to relinquish any control over his company along the way.

Wednesday afternoon, the 27-year-old Mr. Zuckerberg laid out in black and white his mission statement for how Facebook will revolutionize human interaction on the Internet, in full public view for the first time, as the Palo Alto, California-based company finally announced plans to hold a US$5-billion initial public offering (IPO).

For Mr. Zuckerberg, the filing represents the culmination of a journey that began almost exactly eight years ago when he created a social networking site known as “The Facebook” in his Harvard University dorm room, and has seen him become the target of high profile lawsuits, the subject of a Hollywood biopic and the youngest billionaire on the planet.

If the offering hits the higher end of its range — valuing the company at about US$100-billion — Mr. Zuckerberg would be worth more than $28-billion, making him one of the ten richest people in the world. Facebook’s IPO also portends to turns thousands of its employees into millionaires, and several into billionaires, and further solidifies the social networking giant as one of the key power brokers in the digital age.

With more than 845 million active users each month, Facebook is the default home on the Web for nearly 14% of the world’s population and one of a handful of companies — along with Apple Inc., Google Inc. and Twitter Inc. — in a position to shape the future of the social Web and reap the benefits of the billions of advertising dollars flowing onto the Internet each year.
