The hunters become the hunted: Indian state sanctions shooting animal poachers

A western Indian state has declared war on animal poaching by sanctioning its forest guards to shoot hunters on sight in an effort to curb rampant attacks against tigers, elephants and other wildlife.

The government in Maharashtra says injuring or killing suspected poachers will no longer be considered a crime.

According to the Wildlife Protection Society of India, 14 tigers have been killed by poachers in India so far this year — one more than for all of 2011. The tiger is considered endangered, with its habitat range shrinking more than 50 per cent in the last quarter-century and its numbers declining rapidly from the 5,000-7,000 estimated in the 1990s, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Douglas Coupland -created ‘V-Pole’ may take high tech to the streets in Vancouver

To clear its streets of cellphone towers, parking meters, Wi-Fi terminals, streetlights and even community message boards, the city of Vancouver is pushing forward with a scheme to compress all the technologies together into specialized “Vancouver poles” planted throughout the city.

“Meet your inevitable future,” wrote novelist Douglas Coupland, the technology’s creator, in an introductory Tweet.

The device, no larger than a telephone pole, would manage cell signals for multiple carriers, as well as wireless Internet for the surrounding neighbourhood. In-ground pads plugged into the pole would provide inductive charging for parked electric cars. An integrated touch screen would display maps, ads or payment interfaces, and an LED street light would be perched at the top of the pole. Heartbreaking Tearjerker of the Day: Ryan Kennedy was diagnosed with ependymoma, a rare form of brain cancer, in 2007, when he was 4. Now Ryan, at 9, is living out the most adult decision a person can make — he quit all his cancer treatments and chose to die at home.

Ryan’s disease attacks the central nervous system, and caused him to walk into walls and vomit frequently. Since his diagnosis, his treatments have included four rounds of chemotherapy, two bouts of radiation, and seven surgeries. Ryan’s most recent operation, last August, left the right side of Ryan’s face paralyzed, and that’s when he decided to wave the white flag.

When doctors proposed another surgery in February, Ryan refused, telling his parents with certainty, “I’m done with this.” He just wanted to “live the rest of his life.”

Ryan’s final wish was to go swimming, so the whole family took a vacation. Now Ryan is spending his last days at home in hospice care. He has almost died — twice — and he’s shared tearful goodbyes with his brother and sister.

Ryan’s 10th birthday is May 24, but doctors don’t expect him to live that long.

Facebook Releases a Photocentric App for Apple Devices

Facebook announced a new app for the iPhone and the iPod Touch called Facebook Camera. The app, which will include photo editing tools and 15 different types of filters and is intended to make it easier to share photos on Facebook.

“We can basically show you more photos on the app, so we can make a more immersive experience around your photos. On the side of publishing these photos, Facebook Camera lets you upload much higher resolution photos at up to 2,048 by 2,048 pixels wide,” a product manager said.

Facebook recently acquired Instagram, the popular social photo app, which has 40 million users.

All those douchey, formerly known as MySpace, profile pictures will now have hipster filters added to them.

Kyocera Announces Plan for Japan’s Largest Solar Farm

Kyocera announced that it will partner with two other companies to build Japan’s largest solar farm. Located on the southwestern island of Kyushu, the 70-megawatt solar power plant is the start of an effort to explore opportunities to integrate solar within Japan’s electricity grid. Kyocera estimates the cost of the project at approximately $309 million (¥25 billion)

She is not your average elite athlete! She certainly doesn’t resemble a cover girl fitness model! But her physique helps her do remarkable things! This lady has amazed and stumped exercise physiologists and scientists

Why?

She swam to antarctica without a wet suit on. In freezing cold waters, in merely a swimsuit, goggles and cap.

She is the most badass, hardcore lady I know of!! The mental strength she needs to have and the amazing ability she has to swim in waters that would normally kill a person within minutes….its incredible!! Her body fat helps her a great deal! That will fuel her and keep her body semi warm too. By just swimming a mile in such cold waters she can lose more than 5lbs!

Something to think about huh? :)
